Spool is made by one person, so replies aren't instant. I read every message and usually respond within a few days. If you're reporting a problem, it helps enormously to include your iPhone model, your iOS version, and what you were doing when it happened. The Support section inside Spool can pre-fill those details for you.
Where are my recordings stored?
On your iPhone, in Spool's own folder. If you have File Sharing turned on, you can also see them in the Files app under On My iPhone → Spool. Nothing is uploaded to any server of ours, because there isn't one.
Do I need an account?
No. Spool has no accounts, no sign-in, and no password to lose. The app works the moment you open it.
Does Spool work without an internet connection?
Yes, entirely. Recording, playback, transcription, and export all happen on the device.
Is transcription private?
Yes. Spool uses Apple's on-device speech recognition and requires local processing. Your audio is never sent to Apple, to us, or to anyone else for transcription. If a device can't transcribe locally, Spool tells you transcription is unavailable rather than quietly falling back to the cloud.
What happens if I delete the app?
Everything in it goes too: recordings, photos, biographies, and the people you've added. Make a backup before deleting Spool, and before wiping or trading in a phone.
How do I make a backup?
Settings → Backup → Create Backup. Spool builds a single file containing everything, which you can save to Files, iCloud Drive, AirDrop to a computer, or email to yourself. Keeping more than one copy in more than one place is the surest way to not lose anything.
How do I move Spool to a new iPhone?
Make a backup on the old phone, get that file onto the new one, then install Spool and choose Settings → Backup → Restore from Backup. Your people, recordings, photos, and stories come back as they were.
Does Spool sync between my devices?
If you have iCloud enabled, Spool syncs through your own personal iCloud account using Apple's CloudKit. That data belongs to you, not to us, and we can't see it. If you turn on Advanced Data Protection in your iCloud settings, it becomes end-to-end encrypted, meaning not even Apple can read it.
How long can a recording be?
There's no fixed limit. The practical limit is the free space on your iPhone.
Where do the questions come from?
Spool starts you off with a set of questions written to open up a conversation rather than collect facts. You can skip any of them, reword them, remove ones that don't fit, and add your own. No question is required.
Can I use Spool in Spanish?
Yes. Settings → Language switches the app and its starter questions to Spanish.
Can one person have more than one recording?
Yes, as many as you like. That's the intended shape: one person, many recordings, gathered over time.
What is a Keepsake?
It's what Spool exports: one person's recordings, photos, and written life, bundled into a single self-contained file you can open, keep, and pass on. It doesn't need Spool to read, and it doesn't need us to exist.
How do I share one?
Open a person, choose Export, and send it however you like — AirDrop, Messages, Mail, or saving it to Files. The transfer is yours; we're not involved and never receive a copy.
